Broadcasting during a Quarantine

For the past 6 weeks, our lives have changed in a unique way.  COVID-19 caught us all by surprise,  and we have had to adjust appropriately.

My broadcasting career has been put on hold with the MLS suspending all games. Some MLS teams, however, are using the EA Sports’ FIFA video game to create a virtual league that fans can enjoy.  Believe it or not, this takes me back to my start in broadcasting.

I used to play FIFA in my PlayStation when I was a kid.  I would turn down the volume and do the play-by-play myself.  Now stuck at home, I am doing the play-by-play with my kids.  It is so much fun to hear my youngest say, “GOOOOOOOAAAAAAL!”  It takes me back to my childhood.

Not to say that video games are the answer.  We also play a lot of soccer in the back yard.  I set up two rocks in the back yard as a goal, and then my kids and I play all afternoon.

In my hometown of Juarez, Mexico, I would play in the streets.  We would set up two rocks as a goal.  One of us would be the goalie, and the rest of us would battle for the ball and try to score.  You score, you become the goalie.  No teams, just showing off your soccer skills.

This is the same game I am playing with my kids, and it is FUN!  The other day I was pleasantly surprised to see my oldest son practicing with the MOTI App.  He wanted better skills to beat me one on one.

You see.  Quarantine is the perfect time to remember your childhood, play with your kids, create new memories, and have a good time.
